Aerial sports

Baseball & Cricket

Floodlighting for aerial-ball sports, where the ball must be tracked high above the pitch and against the night sky.

Lighting the ball, not just the ground

Baseball and cricket are judged on what happens in the air. A fly ball or a high catch climbs well above the mounting height of the floodlights, so the design must deliver light in a volume above the field, not just on a horizontal grid.

Design priorities

  • Infield vs outfield: baseball needs higher levels on the infield than the outfield; cricket needs the highest levels on the square.
  • Ball tracking: aiming patterns and mast positions are chosen so a ball in flight stays lit and fielders do not look straight into a fixture.
  • Sight screens and batsmen: in cricket, fixtures behind the bowler's arm are avoided.

Luminaires

High-mast stadium modules with narrow optics are usual for the outfield; wider optics on lower positions fill the infield or square.
